What is it about?

Musculoskeletal disorders account for half of all attendances in emergency departments, with large volumes of patients being referred to fracture clinics. This project aimed to see 80% of all patients referred from the virtual fracture clinic for knee and shoulder soft tissue trauma. The results showed that a higher proportion of patients at the soft tissue trauma clinic could be discharged after their first appointment compared to before the pilot.

Why is it important?

The results showed that a higher proportion of patients at the soft tissue trauma clinic could be discharged after their first appointment compared to before the pilot and demonstrated the benefits of standardising patient care pathways.

Perspectives

Writing this article gave us the opportunity to showcase what great work can be achieved by Advanced Physiotherapy Practitioners in orthopaedic medicine. It was great to be able to work alongside my highly skilled colleagues and ultimately standardise patient care. Getting a further years pilot secured following this project was a great achievement.
