What is it about?

The ear, nose and throat department at our hospital initiated telephone and video calls to conduct outpatient consultations during the COVID-19 pandemic. This allowed us to continue delivering healthcare services to our patients during this difficult time. Overall we found patients were very satisfied with the alternative to face-to-face consultations.

Why is it important?

As everyone is acutely aware, the COVID-19 pandemic has had a dramatic impact on healthcare services. One positive outcome has been adaptations to service delivery and, as we have found, there are many benefits which continue beyond the restrictions of the COVID-19 crisis and may help address other global concerns such as the impact on the environment.

Perspectives

I think the global pandemic has given us a unique opportunity to scrutinise the traditional methods of healthcare delivery. Telephone and video conferencing is not a revolutionary concept in most sectors and my personal feeling is that it should be adopted as an alternative to face-to-face consultations in some circumstances.
