What is it about?
Reptile-associated nidoviruses (serpentoviruses), belonging to Coronaviridae, have been reported to cause proliferative interstitial pneumonia in pythons and other reptile species. The present report provides information of complete genome sequence and global distribution of serpentovirus.

Why is it important?
The present report describes the first case of reptile-associated nidoviruses (serpentoviruses) in Asia.
Perspectives
Transbundary transmission of reptile-associated nidoviruses (serpentoviruses) is now taking place. Further investigation is warranted to determine any potential negative impacts caused by serpentovirus infections in exotic snakes and wild snake populations.
