What is it about?

We have tracked music consumption across different music platforms for hundreds of consumers. Some consumers adopt Spotify during our observation period, and we use statistical methods to analyze how their music consumption patterns change as a result of that.

Why is it important?

Millions of consumers have adopted streaming services in the recent past - not only for music (e.g., Spotify), but also for movies (e.g., Netflix) and games (e.g., Steam). However, we don't know much about how consumption of content changes as a result of that. This study sheds light on this issue, taking the example of the music industry as a setting. For instance, we can show that small artists benefit from consumers switch to Spotify, because these artists are more likely to get higher plays.

Perspectives

It's been extremely fun working on this publication, as I was able to connect my personal interest in music with an intriguing research topic of interest to the academic and business community. It has triggered a series of follow ups, as many questions about online streaming are still yet unsolved.
