What is it about?
The naval port in Modlin as compared to other ports of the Vistula Flotilla in 1918–1926 The decision to establish the first Polish naval port on the territory of the former Russian part of partitioned Poland at the confluence of the Vistula and the Narew rivers in 1918 was of great strategic and propaganda importance. It soon became an important base for repairs, storing supplies, transportation and training, not only for the Vistula and Pinsk Flotillas. After 1920, the Naval Port in Modlin was the main military base for both Polish flotillas, located deep in the hinterland of the possible frontline. In some respects, it was also a rear base for the ports of Puck and, temporarily, Gdynia. The liquidation of the Vistula Flotilla in 1926 soon had an indirect impact on the future of the port. It was probably believed in the Ministry of Military Affairs that in the case of a military necessity it would be possible to quickly reinstate the port in Modlin to the role of a rear base for the Flotilla operating in the Polesie region and possibly also on the Vistula river. Key words: navy, Modlin, river ports, Vistula Flotilla, Second Polish Republic
