What is it about?

We conducted a systematic review of scientific literature to identify and classify barriers limiting access and utilization of preventive, curative and rehabilitative services by children with epilepsy and impairments in cognitive, hearing, vision and motor functions in low-and-middle-income countries.

Why is it important?

Identification of the barriers will help policymakers and care providers address these barriers to improve the care and support for children with neurological impairments and disabilities.

Perspectives

I hope this article provides collated evidence on the most significant barriers limiting access and utilization of healthcare services, especially rehabilitation for children with neurological impairments and disabilities in low-and-middle-income countries. As the WHO reviews the global report on disability, and as countries and other stakeholders plan for better healthcare and social support for the affected children, it is imperative to consider addressing the known gaps to help improve the health (quality of life, prevent premature mortality) and non-health (education and social participation) outcomes for these children.
