What is it about?

Microbes can eat pollution given the right conditions. This article explores the potential for the microbe to eat the pharmaceuticals we excrete into wastewater. We used current molecular methods to analyze the microbial populations residing in a wastewater treatment plant that is designed to use ecological processes to treat the wastewater. We examine whether the populations of microbes residing on the plant roots of the ecological treatment system have a higher capacity to eat pharmaceuticals than those residing in the wastewater.
