This is a perspective on the second era of genome projects. New technologies have made these now straightforward and affordable but there are new challenges.

Why is it important?
Sequencing the genome of a new species is a still a significant undertaking that vastly enable future discoveries. As society is investing in new resources to understand the greater tree of life, we have to understand the concepts presented in this paper in order to make cost effective funding decisions. Also, a new publication model is required so that we can ensure that we can extract full value from these extraordinary biological resources.
Perspectives
In this article, I tried to start a conversation about the future of genome projects and how we can make them better. Published in a journal with open reviews it seems that the scientific community is realising how important some of the new challenges are.
