What is it about?
This opinion was stimulated by the most recent Ebola outbreak in Africa. We proposed 8 common sense and cost effective steps that could be taken from data mining to involving the physician's perspective.

Why is it important?
From past experience of HIV and Ebola it has taken years to come up with potential treatments. At present there are many treatments for HIV but none for Ebola. So if there is a new virus identified that causes an epidemic, how do we treat those with the disease? We suggest we can learn from the data we have and at least try to be prepared by developing approaches and identifying broad spectrum antivirals.
Perspectives
A considerable amount of collaboration was involved to put this together with Chris Southan and Megan Coffee. While it came out after the epidemic, it was actually written during the height of it. There are ideas in this opinion which could spur the development of future research in preparation for the next virus.
