What is it about?

Evaluating the peroneal nerve is simple and quick, it takes five minutes or less, and sensitivity in detecting acute neuropathy and myopathy in the ICU is 100%

Why is it important?

Electrophysiological tests in the ICU are complex and time consuming. Their role is important to diagnose critical illness myopathy and neuropathy. This simplified peroneal test may help in evaluating systematically all at-risk ICU patients.

Perspectives

I hope that the test is adopted widely to permit that all patients discharged from the ICU with a diagnosis of ICU-acquired weakness have a proper etiologic diagnosis. I also hope that industry would find results interesting enough to start considering the introduction in the marked of simplified, small, low-cost EMG machines.
