What is it about?

This study aimed at investigating whether our EEG activity can anticipate faces or sounds of different arousal level presented randomly and in which part of the brain this EEG activity can be detected. The exploratory analyses reveal the the anticipatory activity can be stimulus specific and not a generic one.

Why is it important?

Our findings, if independently confirmed, suggest that our EEG activity can detect future random events at the level of their physical characteristics (e.g. visual or auditory).

Perspectives

This is a further contribution to the capacity of our neurophysiological system to anticipate events that couldn't be anticipated from a statistical point of view, apparently violating the time symmetry of events. Furthermore, our findings offer a further confirmation on the possibility to devise apparatuses that can assist human decisions in case of unpredictable events.
