What is it about?

Determining the public health impact of tobacco and nicotine products potentially less harmful than cigarette smoking requires the assessment of consumer perception and behavior. This information needs to be collected in a reliable and valid manner to meet scientific standards. In this paper, we describe the ABOUT (Assessment of Behavioral OUtcomes related to Tobacco and nicotine products) Toolbox, a portfolio of scientifically designed questionnaires we developed using best measurement practices to assess key perception and behavior related to the use of tobacco and nicotine products.

Why is it important?

We describe the methodological steps followed for the development and validation of the questionnaires included in the ABOUT™ Toolbox and detail how the questionnaires are to be made accessible to the scientific community. Promoting scientific standards that will further facilitate standardization and harmonization of data is important so we can more rapidly expand knowledge base on different tobacco and nicotine products.

Perspectives

Writing this article was a great pleasure as it crystallized the long standing collaborative effort involving many scientists from academia and industry to develop the ABOUT Toolbox. I hope this article will help launching a dialogue with the broader scientific community on new perspectives required to develop standards and best practices for self-reported measures applied in tobacco regulatory science.
