What is it about?

We summarise the current state-of-the-art for the analysis of direct RNA-RNA interactions and present the shortcomings of, as well as ideas how to improve the methods.

Why is it important?

In recent years it became apparent that RNA-based regulation is an important aspect in all living organisms that has been more or less neglected for a long time. It is involved in almost all cellular processes and thus also impacts disease processes, such as cancer and neurodegeneration. In the same way RNA-based regulation impacts biotechnology, because also bacteria, yeast and other production systems rely on it. The major mode of action in RNA-based regulation is complementary base-pairing of a regulatory RNA to its target, thus, direct RNA-RNA interactions. Their elucidation in vivo and in a holistic fashion will pave the way for a deep and thorough understanding of RNA-based regulation.

Perspectives

This review gives a concise summary of the field, but more importantly it should attract others to do research in this direction and to push the field forward.
