What is it about?

Dermatomyositis is an autoimmune disorder which may cause significant disability and even death. It usually presents with muscle pain and weakness associated with typical skin rash. Some patients also have, or will develop a malignant tumor. On rare occasions, dermatomyositis may present without muscle symptoms and, in the absence of a typical skin rash, as was the case with our patient, the diagnosis is difficult to make. Isolated swelling of the face or other parts of the body may be seen in dermatomyositis but it is extremely rare.

Why is it important?

This case shows that sudden, isolated swelling of the face may on very rare occasions be caused by dermatomyositis. It is therefore important to have a high level of suspicion because early diagnosis and treatment may improve the outcome of this potentially fatal disease.

Writing this article was a great pleasure not only because I got closer with my co-authors but also because I gained experience. I hope this article is as pleasant reading it as it was writing it.
