Why is it important?

This is a first attempt to estimate the societal cost of sleeping pills. One surprising discovery was that papers claiming economic damages from insomnia were really documenting damage from the sleeping pills used to treat insomnia.

Perspectives

I am hoping that hospital and managed care administrators will give serious thought to whether they should supply sleeping pills. Perhaps this paper will also provoke more research on hypnotics costs.
