Open Archival Information System (OAIS) Model is a framework for long-term preservation of data. Can OAIS be applied for archiving biomedical data? This article contextualizes the functional aspects of the model for successful implementation of biomedical data preservation strategy.

Why is it important?

Vast amounts of biomedical data is being produced for improving human health and services. The 'Big Data' value for biomedical research will be amplified by precision medicine approach for enhancing patient care and disease diagnosis. Successful use and reuse of biomedical research requires a long-term preservation strategy for data intensive biomedical research programs.

Perspectives

Writing this article helped me to think about the power of data that can be leveraged for improving peoples' lives. I hope the article conveys to the biomedical community the importance of long-term preservation of biomedical research data.
