What is it about?

Advanced cancers of mouth (oral cavity) are typically treated with radiotherapy after surgery. Intensity Modulated Radiotherapy delivered using a rotational technique (Volumetric Modulated Arc Radiotherapy - VMAT) allows delivery of highly conformal (tightly sculpted) dose distributions, potentially sparing the normal organs in this region. However because the dose is delivered so conformally chances of missing the tumor exist.

Why is it important?

We show that despite the significant resource constraints in our center, use of VMAT with standardized target volume definition guidelines results in a very low risk of marginal failures.
