What is it about?

Vitamin D receptor (VDR) gene polymorphisms have been linked to asthma development, but their influence on disease severity and outcomes is still uncertain. This study found that the AA genotype of the VDR rs2228570 polymorphism is associated with a higher risk of severe asthma and exacerbations in 152 asthma patients. The AA genotype also correlates with decreased VDR mRNA levels and genes related to steroid response. These results suggest that the rs2228570 polymorphism hampers vitamin D effectiveness, possibly causing increased inflammation and reduced steroid responsiveness. Therefore, rs2228570 could be a useful biomarker for predicting poor prognosis in asthma.
