What is it about?
Here, we report an improved hydrothermal synthesis procedure using the chelating interaction of l-cysteine and MoO3 to increase the 1T phase purity at elevated temperature. The obtained material exhibits excellent activity and stability towards the hydrogen evolution reaction.

Why is it important?
The metallic 1T crystal phase of MoS2 is beneficial for energy applications but its synthesis remains challenging.
Perspectives
Our phase-controlled bottom-up synthesis strategy paves the way for the preparation of metastable-phase TMDs with unique properties, thus extending their applications.
