What is it about?

A new photochromic material having a stilbene and a urea moieties based on photoisomerization and proton transfer. We successfully controlled one-way and mutual photoisomerization by the addition of fluoride ion.

Why is it important?

The present result may offer practical use of stilbene compounds such as a photo-switching material since photoisomerization is deeply involved in the biological behavir of visual sense.

Perspectives

Stilbene compounds have a lot of possibilities for photo-switching together with azobenzene materials.
