What is it about?
The controversy over whether metaphor can work two ways is explored from various approaches and examples, from the metaphor "Man is a Wolf" to possible examples in film, advertising, and real-life situations. Conceptual integration theory applied to poetry shows that poetic metaphors can indeed be reciprocal.

Why is it important?
Studies have shown that we are much influenced in our attitudes and behavior by metaphors that work both ways. Since poetry provides the ultimate experience of creating insights about life through such metaphors, understanding how they work can help us understand our own and others' belief structures.
Perspectives
Thinking we understand other people's statements and attitudes can lead us into attributing unwarranted intentions and motivations to them. Understanding the cognitive processes that enter into our experiencing the literary arts can reveal to us the complexities involved in learning how to recognize and empathize with the feelings of others.
