What is it about?
In this essay, I examine a range of feminist documentaries about abortion, beginning with new videos on YouTube and ending with related films from the 1970s.

Why is it important?
Abortion remains one of the most pressing issues of feminist activism. Since the early 1970s women have been making documentaries about abortion and reproductive justice. These films have raised awareness and reduced stigma, and they have given voice to women's experiences. But are they working politically? Why and why not?
Perspectives
I wrote this article because I'm interested in the ways feminist documentaries have shaped debates about abortion in the US. Feminist activism has always depended on documentaries to reach broad publics and change hearts and minds. How have feminist filmmakers handled matters of women's health and pregnancy termination? It turns out that several trends connect films from the 1970s to today.
