This paper explores how the human body was used metaphorically in a Maya dance drama, called the Rab'inal Achi, to enact and resolve actual historical conflicts in the 16th century in the region that is now Guatemala.

Why is it important?

This is one of the most complete examples of a pre-Hispanic Maya literature with likely minimal Spanish influence. The human body was and is very important in Maya society, cosmology, and language, but this is the first study of this type about this particular work.
