What is it about?

Acquired fibrinogen deficiency is a major determinant of severe bleeding in different clinical conditions, including cardiac surgery, trauma, post-partum hemorrhage, liver surgery and transplantation. The existing guidelines recommend supplementing fibrinogen in patients with severe bleeding when the fibrinogen concentration is low. Different devices for its determination are presently available on the market, based on different technologies and different activators and platelet inhibitors. The present review addresses the problem of fibrinogen concentration measure with different devices, providing a potential tool for the identification of the critical values.
