What is it about?
There is a need for a clinically relevant and feasible outcome measure to facilitate clinical studies in perioperative care medicine. In this study, we proposed a novel composite outcome measure, invasive respiratory or vasopressor support (IRVS) and/or death. Patients with IRVS had a prolonged hospital course and lower long-term survival rate compared to those without IRVS, even if alive at postoperative day 30. These findings support the validity of IRVS combined with death as a composite outcome measure for clinical studies in perioperative care medicine.

Why is it important?
We proposed a new composite outcome measure, invasive respiratory or vasopressor support (IRVS) and/of death within 30 postoperative days for use in clinical studies inperioperative care medicine. This new composite outcome measure can be used in even retrospective studies because data required to define IRVS usually are readily available. Using this feasible outcome measure might help promote perioperative care research.
