What is it about?

Preoperative assessment typically equates to evaluate, accept (unless extreme) and adapt to the presenting condition of the patient and commonly occurs in close proximity to the surgical date. While this temporal paradigm helps mitigate unexpected findings on the day of surgery that may delay throughput and enables a pre-operative history and examination, it does not allow proactive management and optimization of modifiable medical conditions preoperatively. Evidence regarding how to best balance efforts to mitigate modifiable risk factors with the temporal imperative for surgical intervention is limited. A deeper understanding of the pre- and intraoperative dynamic stands to enhance the value proposition of surgery and population health. In this article we describe the implementation of a collaborative preoperative clinic created to apply due attention to patient preparation for surgery, and in doing so, continue improving patient outcome.
