What is it about?
Heart disease is a leading cause of death and suffering in pregnancy. Assessment of fitness levels in pregnant women is important because low fitness levels are linked to heart disease, however fitness levels are not assessed in pregnant women. As an assessment of fitness and in order to generate a reference interval, we have measured for the first time the distance walked and heart rate recovery from exercise using the Six Minute Walk Test in women in late pregnancy. We found that healthy pregnant women walk relatively long distances in 6 minutes and at a speed of approximate 3.0 mph. We showed for the first time that low resting heart rates are associated with increased fitness levels in pregnant women, and that increased heart rate changes to exercise result in longer recovery times from exercise in pregnant women. We have also shown for the first time that women expect to feel more tired and breathless with exercise than they actually do.
