What is it about?
Patients with acromegaly have calcium and bone problems. We studied a group of patients with acromegaly and a control group in order to better understand these problems. In addition, we clarified the effect of acromegaly treatment on calcium and bone metabolism markers.

Why is it important?
Our findings indicate that calcium and bone metabolism problems are common in acromegaly patients. Increased awareness and understanding of these abnormalities may reduce long-term complications including vertebral compression fractures and kidney stones.
Perspectives
The health issues derived from calcium and bone changes in patients with acromegaly have long-term implications. Some resolve after acromegaly is controlled, some are persistent. It is important to diagnose acromegaly early, so treatment is delivered in a timely fashion and complications minimized. There is no specific medical treatment for compression fractures that occur even many years after diagnosis made. This article is a step forward in understanding the possible mechanisms. Further research in this field is necessary.
