What is it about?

The edge-on-impact test is a standard experimental configuration to test material behavior upon impact, i.e. under very high strain rates. We present here state-of-the-art experiments and also introduce a completely new idea of modeling ceramic, brittle material with a particle-based molecular dynamics method.

Why is it important?

Our findings show that no complex model of material behavior is needed in order to describe material comminution realistically. We introduce a three-parameter model which is already capable of capturing key shock wave physics phenomena in the failure of brittle materials such as ceramics.
