What is it about?
Every day hundreds of satellites orbit the Earth, and many are collecting environmental data used to understand both the short and long-term changes to the planet. However, you need a little bit of knowledge to find, download, analyse and view the data. This is where this book comes in.

Why is it important?
People see remote sensing data every day without realising it, as it’s included in news programmes and weather forecasts and some regularly use it with software packages such as Google Earth and Maps. Many people don’t realise they’re looking at satellite data, and even fewer realise that this data is often freely available and accessible to anyone.
Perspectives
I wanted to create a book that could take a complete beginner through the basic scientific principles and teach them to do their own practical remote sensing at home or at work, using just a personal computer.
