What is it about?

Referrals from accident and emergency teams in the UK to psychiatric (mental health) liaison teams vary throughout the week and throughout the year. We looked at referrals over 3 years from 3 large London hospitals to identify patterns of referrals.

Why is it important?

The patterns identified can help support appropriate staffing of mental health services to improve patient's experience

Perspectives

Its important to acknowledge that people presenting to acute services in mental distress need to be looked after sensitively and in a timely fashion. Having the most appropriate staffing levels at the busiest times can ensure that people do not have to wait for extended periods and can get the right help when they need it.
