Why is it important?
Safeguarding is everybody’s business but it can also feel daunting for professionals, service users and carers involved in the process! In writing our article for the British Journal of Psychiatry Bulletin, Dr Boland and I hoped to help Clinicians navigate some of the complexities of Safeguarding under the Care Act 2014, using a number of hypothetical case studies to illustrate some of the common dilemmas which may arise. We also hoped to raise awareness of the Care Act principles of wellbeing and the ‘Making Safeguarding Personal’ agenda which strives to ensure that the service user and their individual wishes and needs remain central to the Safeguarding process. We hope that this article will be beneficial in ensuring that clinicians feel more confident in their understanding of this legislation and the potential positive impact it can have for our service users.
