What is it about?
The preconditioner is an operator similar to the original operator but for a layered medium. Applying FFTs along lateral directions transfers the preconditioner to a set of boundary value problems for ordinary differential equations. These boundary value problems are independent of each other and can be solved concurrently. To be closer to the original operator the layered medium is built as averaging the original medium along the horizontal planes.

Why is it important?
Our solver was benchmarked on a series of three dimensional realistic models. Performance and scalability measurements prove the solver competitiveness.
Perspectives
I hope this article will be interesting for developers of mathematical software as well as researchers in numerical mathematics. Students may also find it interesting for them and useful.
