What is it about?

Our study found that genetic differences in IL-6 and IFN-γ affect anemia severity in Sudanese children with kidney failure, despite treatment. These genes influence inflammation and may help guide personalized care.

Why is it important?

Our study is the first to link IL-6/IFN-γ genes to anemia severity in Sudanese children with kidney failure, despite standard treatment. These findings are critical for personalized care in conflict zones where kidney disease is rising.

Perspectives

We extend our deepest appreciation to the entire team whose dedication made this important study possible. While data collection was completed before the outbreak of Sudan's conflict, the subsequent analysis, interpretation, and manuscript preparation were carried out under extraordinarily challenging circumstances - frequent power outages, limited resources, and personal hardships. Special recognition goes to Dr. Abier Abdelaziz Makkawi for her exceptional patience and perseverance. Despite the deteriorating conditions, her unwavering commitment to rigorous scientific analysis and clear communication ensured this vital work reached publication. Her resilience exemplifies the determination of Sudanese researchers to contribute meaningful science even in adversity. We are equally grateful to our colleagues at Soba University Hospital, the National Research Center, and Delta Scientific Consultation Center for maintaining focus on this important work while simultaneously addressing the urgent healthcare needs of their communities. This study represents more than just scientific findings - it demonstrates how medical research can persist and contribute valuable knowledge even during times of crisis. The insights gained about genetic influences on anemia in Sudanese children with kidney failure will help improve care for this vulnerable population. #PediatricResearch #GlobalHealth #ScientificResilience #Sudan
