What is it about?

DNA methylation is a change on top of DNA that is often disrupted in cancer cells. Identifying changes in DNA methylation in cancer samples compared to normal samples allows to identify which genes are being switched on or off. Here we introduce such an algorithm, MethylMix, to accomplish this task.

Why is it important?

Identifying DNA methylation changes in an automated way allows to identify novel oncogenes and tumor suppressor genes.

Perspectives

This is the first pancancer analysis of DNA methylation changes, showing that certain cancer sites are more similar to each other based on their methylation patterns rather than their anatomical site.
