What is it about?

This study examines whether carbon emissions trading can help make digital agriculture more environmentally efficient. Using data from 30 Chinese provinces between 2011 and 2022, we compare regions covered by China’s carbon emissions trading pilot policy with those not covered by the policy. The results show that the policy significantly improves the eco-efficiency of digital agriculture, and this finding remains robust across a range of additional tests. The effects differ across regions and according to their levels of digital agricultural eco-efficiency. We also find that increased forest coverage is one pathway through which the policy contributes to improved eco-efficiency.

Why is it important?

Agriculture faces the dual challenge of increasing productivity while reducing its environmental and carbon footprint. At the same time, digital technologies are rapidly transforming agricultural production and management. Our findings show that market-based environmental regulation can support the greener development of digital agriculture rather than simply imposing additional environmental constraints. The study also highlights the role of forest coverage in linking carbon trading policy with improved agricultural eco-efficiency. These findings provide useful evidence for policymakers seeking to combine carbon reduction, digital transformation, and sustainable agricultural development.

Perspectives

I see this study as part of a broader effort to understand how environmental policy and technological change can work together to support sustainable agriculture. Digitalization alone does not necessarily guarantee better environmental outcomes, so it is important to examine the policy conditions under which digital agriculture becomes more environmentally efficient. By studying China’s carbon emissions trading pilots, this research provides evidence on how market-based environmental regulation can interact with agricultural digital transformation. I hope these findings can contribute to wider discussions on climate policy, agricultural modernization, and the transition toward more sustainable food systems.
