What is it about?

The paper presents an alternative view of communication and suggests some ways for communication theory to become more visible in implementation science.

Why is it important?

This is important because the prevailing view of communication...from sender to receiver...does not capture the crucial aspect of mutual understanding which is needed.

Perspectives

This important paper situates communication theory in the larger frame of social constructionism, a progressive development necessary in healthcare. Various healthcare disciplines, each trained in separate spheres and paradigms, must develop mutual understanding to provide a complete picture of a patient care situation. Communication undergirds everything we do, yet by being "hidden" we cannot make the changes necessary to move implementation science forward.
