What is it about?

Metabolism is influenced by neurodegeneration and in particular one specific signaling molecule released by adipose tissue (adiponectin) is specifically altered in several neurodegenerative diseases (such as Alzheimer's disease and Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis). Interestingly, in Amyotrophic Lateral disease patients there is a gender specific alteration (reduced levels in males and higher values in females)

Why is it important?

Neurodegeneration is a process which not confined in the nervous system but involves all tissues of the body. Definition of the interplay between different body district may lead to novel therapeutic approaches

Perspectives

Studying the link between neurodegeneration and metabolism may open new perspectives in the clinical tretment of neurodegenerative diseses
