What is it about?

This study shows that a significant number of young women in cities of wealthy countries struggle to afford menstrual products, and this struggle can negatively affect their mental well-being. Even after considering other factors that might contribute to mental health issues, the link between period poverty and poor mental health remained strong. If future studies confirm these findings, implementing policies to improve access to menstrual products could help reduce the mental health burden faced by young women.

Why is it important?

The research is important because it addresses the connection between poverty and mental health, focusing specifically on the issue of period poverty among young women. While period poverty has received attention in low and middle-income countries, its prevalence and impact in high-income countries like Spain are less understood. This study aims to fill that gap by examining the association between period poverty and mental health in a representative sample of young women living in Barcelona, Spain.
