What is it about?
3D cell constructs represent a new in vitro test system to bridge the gap between cell culture and animal models. Here we evaluate 3D gingival fibroblast toroids as a simple and feasible in vitro assay. We found that collange membranes modulate behavior of 3D gingival fibroblast toroids.

Why is it important?
Development in guided tissue regeneration requires biomaterial testing. It is important to develop novel in vitro 3D models which help to reduce the number of animal studies.
Perspectives
It was fascinating to see that 3D gingival fibroblast toroids expand on the collagen membranes but not on tissue culture plates. We did not expect this effect.
