Our article provides crucial insights into birth defects in Bangladesh, revealing a higher mortality risk among affected neonates. The findings advocate for enhanced antenatal care and community-level screening to improve outcomes.
Perspectives
Birth defects are a significant contributor to neonatal mortality, especially in low and middle-income countries. Our study found that neonates with birth defects had a 1.59-fold higher mortality risk compared to those without defects. This hospital-based prospective observational study was conducted in the Department of Neonatology at Chittagong Medical College Hospital, Bangladesh. Among 5,223 neonates, 183 had birth defects, with musculoskeletal anomalies being the most common. Maternal hypertension and diabetes mellitus were identified as strong predictors of birth defects, highlighting the need for targeted antenatal screening. However, more work is still needed to implement effective preventive strategies and improve neonatal outcomes.
