What is it about?

Interatrial block reflects atrial impairment which plays a key role in the development of atrial arrhythmias and cardioembolick stroke. However, the impact of this ECG pattern on all-cause mortality is less known. We have shown that interatrial block is an independent predictor of all-cause mortality after first-ever ischemic stroke in patients without concominant cardiovascular diseases.

Why is it important?

Our findings suggest that interatrial block on ECG is a marker of poor prognosis on preclinical stages of cardiovascular disorders and can be used as a simple tool in risk stratification of patients.

Perspectives

I hope that this article added a new knowledge on interatrial block as an ECG marker of underlying cardiovascular disorders in prediction of long-term prognosis.
