What is it about?

Genes and genomes duplicate during evolution, followed by functional diversification. This study show how how USP4, USP15 and USP11 evolved and functionally diversified. Phylogenetic trees were constructed and corroborated by analysis of gene synteny, based on the rationale that recently diverged paralogous genes will share more flanking genes in the same order than those having diverged for a long time.

The order of gene duplication are essential for inferring subsequent subfunctionalization and neofunctionalization. "He who sees things from the very beginning has the most advantageous view of them".
