What is it about?

This papers outlines some basics of the technologies underlying the semantic web. It shows how the basic bit of knowledge is encoded into a so-called triple that consists of three parts: something about which something is said, what is being said about that thing, and what the meaning of that is. For example, these three things could be "methane" "is a" "gas".

Why is it important?

The new RDF technologies provide a pretty universal approach to capture knowledge. Unique powers include tight integration with ontologies and the ability to link completely independent databases ("linked data").
