What is it about?

The article illuminates next of kins experiences of next of kin from the sudden and unexpected death of a relative from acute stroke through utilizing their narratives. Narrative thematic analysis were used for the analysis. Three themes emerged showing facets of next of kin’s experiences of a relative’s sudden and unexpected death from stroke; Divided feelings about the sudden and unexpected death; Perception of time and directed attention when keeping vigil; Contradictions and arbitrary memories when searching for understanding.

Why is it important?

Next of kins experiences are enlightened and showing that the acute incidence of stroke has a great impact on the next of kin and their life. It pervades the next of kins life and show that it is a challenge for health care professionals to identify the next of kins individual needs.

Perspectives

The acute incidence of a life-threatening stroke for the patient shows as an acute event having the potential to totally pervade the next of kins life and enlighten the need of support from health care preofessionals.
