What is it about?

A study involving almost 9000 people living in the Arctic city of Tromsø suggests that the level of mental distress does not change during the different seasons. However, there are more reported sleeping problems during winter time and less sleeping problems during spring.

Why is it important?

There has been much debate regarding the impact of winter and darkness on mental health. This study shows that people living in the Arctic are not distressed by winter and darkness, although troubles relating to sleeping are more common during the dark period.
