What is it about?

How does life satisfaction compare for individuals with eating disorders? This study looked at the connection of life satisfaction with eating disorder symptom severity as well as family history of eating disorders, and other characteristics. Sixty people with a diagnosis of an eating disorder participated. We found that their average life satisfaction was below what the population average is. Their life satisfaction was also associated with private insurance, a past eating disorder, and some specific eating disorder symptoms.

Why is it important?

Understanding this connection can help to inform interventions that focus on both eating disorders and life satisfaction.

Perspectives

This article was the product of collaborations between both colleagues and a PhD student. It also helps to focus on not only treatment or prevention, but also that satisfaction with life is a critical component of eating disorder recovery.
