What is it about?

This paper proposes sparse control, also known as maximum hands-off control, for discrete-time systems. The equivalence between L0 and L1 optimal controls is also discussed. Then, the control is extended to feedback control using model predictive control (MPC).

Why is it important?

In view of application, maximum hands-off control has great potential to revolutionize the industry for its green characteristic; saving energy, reducing CO2, and eliminating vibration/noise, as mentioned above. On the other hand, in view of control theory, the paper gives a new theorem of the equivalence of L0 optimality and L1 optimality in the discrete-time domain, which has been recently investigated in wide area of research such as signal processing, machine learning, statistics, etc.

Perspectives

This is the first paper that discusses maximum hands-off control in the discrete-time domain.
