What is it about?

Most advanced elderly cancer patients experience fatigue, anorexia, and declining physical function due to cancer cachexia, for which effective interventions have not been established. We report here the background, hypothesis, and design of the next-step multicenter, randomized phase II study to evaluate the efficacy of the NEXTAC program (Nutritional and Exercise Treatment for Advanced Cancer), the NEXTAC-TWO study.

Why is it important?

To the best of our knowledge, this is the first randomized trial to evaluate the efficacy and safety of a multimodal intervention (Exercise + Nutrtion) for elderly cancer patients involving interprofessional collaboration. (Trial Registry No: UMIN000028801)

Perspectives

The combination of our NEXTAC prgram and emerging anticachectic agents will be the next step to improve the ADL and QOL of elderly cachectic patients with advanced cancer.
