What is it about?
We tested whether nasal cells, sampled and grown in culture, could be used to predict how effective therapies for improving mucus clearance in cystic fibrosis will be. We used a a series of imaging methods designed to measure how quickly people clear mucus and demonstrated that one specific measurement made in cell culture (Fluorescence Recovery After Photo Bleaching, FRAP) was very predictive of that persons response to a hydrating therapy (inhaled hypertonic saline).
